What is Machine Learning ?

Last Updated October 06, 2024

A subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on the development of algorithms and statistical models that enable computers to perform tasks without explicit instructions, relying on patterns and inference instead.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that performs data analysis tasks without explicit instructions. Machine learning technology can process large quantities of historical data, identify patterns, and predict new relationships between previously unknown data.

Or in layman terms:

Teaching computers to learn patterns from data without being explicitly programmed. It's like teaching a child to recognize shapes by showing them different pictures.

Some of the few examples showing how big companies are using Machine Learning in their system experiencing good user experience.

  • Amazon's search engine employs machine learning techniques to improve search relevance and accuracy. Natural language processing (NLP) algorithms understand user queries, interpret product descriptions, and match search results to user intent, enhancing the search experience.

  • Flipkart's recommendation engine analyzes user behavior, purchase history, and browsing patterns to provide personalized product recommendations. Machine learning algorithms power features such as "Customers who bought this item also bought" and "Frequently bought together," increasing customer engagement and sales.
